Whitley Bay is a seaside town in Tyne and Wear. I was part of Northumberland until 1974 and is around 10 miles east of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The town can be accessed easily via car, bus and metro routes. The postcode districts for Whitley Bay are NE25 and NE26.
Fun fact: The town was known as Whitley until the 1890s but was renamed Whitley Bay in 1901.
St Mary's Lighthouse is located just across the causeway St Mary's Island. The Victorian lighthouse was deactivated in 1984. When the tide is out, visitors can cross the causeway and head up the 137 steps for panoramic views over Whitley Bay.
The lighthouse also has a small visitor centre where you can read about the history of the lighthouse and learn about species of nature that reside around the island.e website.
Spanish City is a white hall that was built on the seafront in 1910. Its famous white dome once housed a concert hall, restaurant, ballroom and funfair but was closed at the start of the 2000s. In 2018 the iconic building was reopened as an events and dining centre. Today, visitors can enjoy a traditional tearoom, fish and chips from the restaurant, and a champagne bar alongside stunning sea views.
The Playhouse is an entertainment that has resided in Whitley Bay since the 1930s. In the early 2010s, the theatre was given a complete overhaul and turned into a performing arts venue.

Whitley Bay has a well-reviewed gold course that is located a few hundred yards from the coastline. Founded in 1890, the golf course was designed by Open Champion Ted Ray and is one of only 50 clubs in the UK to have achieved the GEO Certified® excellence award.
