Britain's largest sculpture
Located in Gateshead, the Angel of the North is Britain's largest sculpture. Erected in 1998 by Antony Gormley for Gateshead Council, the famous landmark weighs 200 tons and has a 54 metre wing span. It has since become one of the most talked about and recognisable pieces of art ever produced.
World's first covered train station
In the past, passengers had to brave the northern weather while waiting for their trains. Inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1850, Newcastle Central Station was the world's first covered train station. After its opening in August 29th, the day was declared a public holiday in Newcastle and continues to be one to this day.
Swing bridge
Newcastle's famous swing bridge was the world's largest swinging bridge at the time of its construction in 1876. It has swung over 300,000 times in the last 150 years and continues to use the same machinery installed by William Armstrong when it was first built. The bridge was renovated in 2018 which involved 25,000 hours of work and 10,000 screws used for repairs.
