Warkworth is located about 1 mile from the Northumberland coast in a loop of the River Coquet. It can be accessed by the main A1068 road and is 30 miles north of Newcastle.
Warkworth Castle
While the foundation of the castle is unclear, it is likely that Saxon Earls of Northumbria resided at Warkworth castle before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The castle was a favourite residence of the Percy family from the 14th to the 17th century. They currently reside in Alnwick castle. The castle features a cross-shaped keep and has the lion badge of the Percy family, carved throughout.
Warkworth Hermitage
Hidden on the south bank of the River Coquet, the Hermitage was created by the Earls of Northumberland. It was initially used a form of private chapel where a priest would live in a cave-like dwelling to say prayers for the souls of the Earl and his family. Today, the hermitage can only be reached by boat and requires a ticket from the English Heritage counter at Warkworth Castle. To access it, you have to walk half a mile to the landing stage before being rowed across the River Coquet. The Hermitage is only open on days when the river current is slow and on good weather conditions so it is always worth checking the website before planning a trip.
