In 635 the Northumbrian king Oswald summoned an Irish monk named Aidan to become bishop of his kingdom and found a monastery. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is linked to mainland by a causeway. This is cut off twice every day by fast incoming tides. Lindisfarne is a located a few miles off the Northumberland coast close to the border of Scotland and can only be accessed via the main causeway.
Lindisfarne Castle
Sitting on the highest point of the island, Lindisfarne Castle dates back to the 16th century offers some of the best views of the island. Built in 1550, approximately when Lindisfarne Priory went out of use, the small castle was built with materials from the Priory. Today, the interior of the castle has been renovated to showcase how the rooms would have looked in the 1900s when owned by Edward Hudson. Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life magazine, converted the fort into a castle that would become a comfortable residence. In 1911 Gertrude Jekyll, a celebrated gardener, created a small garden for the castle.

Pilgrim's way
The road to Lindisfarne was constructed in 1954 and until then vertical poles lined up were the only indicators of a safe route between the mainland and island. It is more direct that the causeway road that is used by traffic. In low tide, it is possible to cross the 3 mile route for beautiful scenery and follow the route that would have been taken in medieval times. Walking the route takes approximately 75-90 minutes and waterproof shoes are recommended. Always check the tide times prior to crossing.
Lindisfarne Heritage Centre
The Lindisfarne Centre offers an insight into the rich history of Lindisfarne through a series of exhibitions. Perfect for all the family, the centre also has interactive displays and is filled with children's games and activities. The centre highlights how the monks first produced the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Viking raid of AD793.
