Simple Garden Cleaning Tips
Tackle the weeds
Start by doing a general tidy up by removing any twigs, dried leaves and dead plants from the colder seasons.
Weeds are notoriously difficult to remove so we recommend ensuring that the soil is damp before you begin. This will make it much easier to remove the plant from its root and prevent future regrowth.
If you have weeds in between hard surfaces, such as a patio, pour hot water over the cracks to drench the soil, kill the plant and help with removal.
Collect the weeds in a container and dispose of them in the garden bin, rather than adding them to your compost.
The easiest way to prevent future weeds is by laying newspaper or landscape fabric over your soil and topping that with a layer of mulch.
Top tip:
Remove any thick clumps of leaves that are on top of plants in your flower beds so they won’t slow any new growth.
Revive the grass
Use a pair of rubber kitchen gloves to comb through the grass to remove any dead pieces and debris.
Spring is the perfect time to sow grass seeds on any bare patches on your lawn. Remove any weeds from the soil over a period of 2-3 weeks to rest the soil before sowing.
Mow your grass to approximately 25mm in length and sprinkle the seed across moistened grass evenly. Avoid compacting many seeds together as they will require air to grow.
Mow your lawn regularly and water during warmer seasons to encourage growth throughout the year.

Welcome birds
A dirty bird feeder can harbour bacteria and germs that can contaminate birds. It’s important to wash your bird feeder every month.
Empty the feeder and dispose of the contents in a bin. Use hot, soapy water to thoroughly scrub and remove any debris from the feeder. Rinse with cool water and leave to dry outside.
Top tip: Many new models of bird feeders have detachable designs that make them easier to clean every month.
