When was the last time you cleaned your patio? Moss and other fungi develop when a patio is exposed to moisture, leading to stains that ruin the colour of the paving. Fortunately, a little maintenance can protect your patio and keep it looking at its best throughout the year.
Ditch the overpriced patio cleaner and find out how to clean patio slabs naturally with our simple guide below.
MMCS Commercial Cleaning is a family-owned cleaning business operating across the north east of England. Our staff are trained to use environmentally-friendly products to make your property sparkle without using any harsh chemicals.
Please note that the below method uses white vinegar (that can be bought in more shops). This is an effective cleaner and good alternative for a chemical-based cleaning product but should not be used on limestone as it can damage the surface.

How to Clean Patio Slabs
Sweep
Remove all furniture and items from the patio to create a clear space. Use a brush to sweep away any dust and dirt from the surfaces.
Remove weeds
When learning how to clean patio slabs, it’s important to fully remove weeds. Focus on removing the weed with its root to prevent future regrowth.
We recommend removing weeds manually after heavy rain as this will make it easier to remove the weed with the root.
An efficient, chemical-free way of killing weeds is by pouring boiling water between the patio slabs.
Vinegar cleaning solution
Mix a one part white vinegar with one part warm water in a container. The acidity of the white vinegar tackles tougher stains on your patio slabs and helps to remove layers of built-up dirt.
Gently pour this solution over the patio, ensuring that all areas are covered. Create more solution if required. Leave the solution to work on the patio for at least thirty minutes.
Scrub and rinse
Use a hard bristled brush to scrub the vinegar solution onto tough stains in circular motions. Repeat until stains disappear.
Pour warm water over the patio to gently wash away the vinegar solution towards a drainage point.
Check the patio to ensure that any jointing compounds haven’t been scrubbed away or come loose. Leave the water to air dry before moving the furniture back.
