How to remove stains from wood
Always spot test new products or solutions in a hidden area first before tackling a stain.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a great natural alternative to cleaning products for removing stains from wood, particularly if they are dye stains.
Mix a little water and baking soda into a paste and spread this mixture over the stain.
Use a wet sponge to gently rub the mixture into the wood and leave for 5 minutes.
Be aware that baking soda is a mild abrasive so should be rubbed in gently.
Wipe away with a damp cloth.
Top tip: Always avoid using scrubbing materials such as steel wool to remove stains from wood as, similar to sandpaper, it will ruin the smooth finish of your wood.
Petroleum jelly
Petroleum jelly, or vaseline, is a great way for removing water stains from wood.
Rub some petroleum jelly on the watermark and leave to sit overnight. In the morning, use a soft damp cloth (such as a microfibre cloth) to wipe it away and remove the stain.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste is an efficient way to remove heat stains from wood. Whether the stains are caused by a lack of coaster or due to an electrical appliance, this simple solution is an easy way to remove heat stains from wood.
First, clean the stained area with a damp cloth and leave it to air dry. Mix non-gel toothpaste with baking soda to create a paste.
Rub this paste gently onto the stain using a cloth and leave to work on the stain for at least 10 minutes.
Wipe away the residue with a soft, damp cloth.
