How to Clean a Rug
Remove dirt
The first step to cleaning a rug is to remove as much dirt and debris from the rug as possible. This can be done by shaking vigorously outside or by vacuuming.
Vacuum both sides of the rug, using a brush attachment to pick up on any stray hairs if you have pets.
Deodorise
Sprinkle baking soda over the rug, particularly focusing on any stains, and leave to sit for one hour.
Baking soda is an effective, environmentally-friendly deodoriser that soaks up any unpleasant smells. It also helps to remove any difficult stains.
For any particularly bad smells, consider adding a few drops of colourless essential oils to help mask any foul odours.
Wash
Reminder: always do a patch test in a hidden area prior to using a vinegar cleaning solution.
Spray white vinegar over the baking soda to create a fizzing reaction.
Use a spine or a soft brush to work the solution through the rug.
If necessary, add a little more baking soda and vinegar to any tough stains. Leave the solution for at least five minutes to work on cleaning the rug.
Rinse
Rinse away all remains of the white vinegar and baking soda solution by using cold water.
Continue rinsing until the water runs clearly.
Top tip:
Clean your rug outside where possible but if the weather is unfavourable, we recommend cleaning your rug in the bath to reduce any spills.
Remove excess water using a squeegee or soft brush. You can also blot up water using a microfibre cloth or a towel.
Dry
Leave your clean rug to dry naturally outside where possible.
If drying inside, ensure that you flip the rug so that both sides are fully dry. You can also use fans to speed up the drying process.
Once the rug is fully dry, return it to the room and follow through with a final vacuum and brushing to revive the rug.
