Top tip: always check the manufacturer's care tag before testing a new cleaning method. This is usually located under one of the cushions.
Vacuum the sofa before applying a cleaning method to reduce the risk of scrubbing dirt and grime into the surface.
Water stains are common on leather sofas and are caused by other things in water, such as minerals, being left on the surface once the water dries. Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently wipe the leather in a circular motion to spread out the edges of the water stains and leave to dry.
For stubborn water stains, apply a little mayonnaise onto the leather to allow the natural oils and vinegar to fully remove the stain. Rinse with a slightly damp cloth and leave to air dry.
Always use water lightly when applying to leather as excess water can cause the leather to shrink and damage.
Use a little baby oil or olive oil to reduce the appearance of scratches on a leather sofa. Apply a little amount and rub until the scratches are removed. Repeat as necessary.
Always test new cleaning methods on a hidden area of the fabric sofa first.
Dissolve a few tablespoons of baking soda into hot water. Gently dab this mixture onto the stain with a sponge and dry with a soft cloth. For newer stains, the baking soda will remove odours and reduce colouring.
Greasy or oily stains can be effectively removed by sprinkling a layer of talcum powder or baking soda onto the stain and leaving it to soak up any oils. Leave overnight before vacuuming.
For tougher stains, combine one tablespoon of washing up liquid with one tablespoon of white vinegar and a cup of warm water. Add baking soda into the mixture and shake vigorously. Spray the solution onto tougher stains and leave to sit for ten minutes. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the mixture and leave to air dry.
