Top tip: soak the inside of a washing up liquid for ten minutes before washing to prevent stains
Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda into the cup and add a little warm water to form a paste. Use a hard sponge to scrub the paste into the stains and leave for ten minutes. Remove the paste with warm soapy water and rinse.
Vinegar is one of nature's most powerful cleaners and can be used to remove stubborn stains or discolouration from coffee mugs. Fill half of the mug with boiling water and top up with white vinegar. Leave the mixture to soak for ten minutes. Pour the vinegar solution down the sink (this will also naturally remove any bad odours from the sink) and scrub the mug with a sponge. Wash the mug with washing up liquid and rinse.
Course salt is a great way to scrub away discolouration and stains without using harsh chemicals. Place course salt into the bottom of the mug and add a few ice cubes on top. Place cling film tightly over the top of the mug and shake vigorously. The ice will help to move the salt around the cup to tackle stains.
