Weighted blankets have risen in popularity over the past few years due to the benefits of applying gentle pressure to help with sleeping, depression and insomnia. However, weighted blankets can be expensive and need to be washed and cleaned with appropriate care to help them last longer, and the additional weight can make it difficult to wash. Read how to wash a weighted blanket without chemicals in our simple guide below.

Like normal blankets, weighted blankets can soak up dirt, sweat and oil over time. If you use your blanket every night, we recommend washing it at least once every three weeks or spot-cleaning if it gets dirty. If you don't use it every day then this can be lengthened to once every few months.
If you use your weighted blanket regularly, we recommend investing a removeable duvet cover to protect the outer layer and make it easier to keep your blanket clean.
Top tip: Different weighted blankets have different fillings such as glass micro beads and plastic poly pellets. While these materials are safe to wash in the washing machine, always consult the care tag before cleaning for the first time.
Make sure that your bath tub is clean and rinsed down before filling it with a few inches of cold water. Mix in one cup of white vinegar and a few tablespoons of baking soda.
The vinegar and baking soda will help to remove odours and stains from the blanket without using chemicals.
If necessary, remove the outer layer of the weighted blanket and wash separately. Submerge the blanket fully under the water. Spray any stains or marks with white vinegar and use a toothbrush to gently scrub while submerged.
Leave to soak for twenty minutes before rinsing with cold water from the shower head.
Unplug the water and gently flatten the blanket, folding it in half to remove excess water. Avoid wringing out the blanket and instead us your weight to gently push water out.
Before hanging up your weighted blanket to dry, ensure that the weight inside has been equally distributed to prevent clumps. If possible, spread out the blanket evenly across furniture of the edge of a bathtub to keep it in good shape.
