The most common reasons for a squeaky chair are rusty or loose screws and bolts, rusty springs and wheels and broken chair parts that need replacing. Our simple guide on how to stop a squeaky chair helps you identify and solve the root of the problem and make your chair functional again.
How to fix a squeaky chair
Top tip: Ask someone to sit in the chair to help you find the source of the squeaky noise
Flip the chair
Place the base of the seat onto a table to have a clear view of the chair's mechanisms. If necessary, remove the chair arms to stabilise the chair.
Tighten bolts
Check all nuts and bolts to ensure that none are loose. Loose bolts move around more which can lead to squeaking. Check that all nuts and bolts are aligned and use a screwdriver to tighten them. Replace any bolts that look worn or rusty.
You can also use a lubricant such as an oil to gently remove the top layer of rust with a soft brush (such as an old toothbrush).
Apply oil
Apply a lubricating oil to all screws and bolts, wiping off excess liquid with a soft cloth. If possible, use an oil spray with a straw feature to reach into any small spaces with ease.
You can also spray oil on a soft cotton cloth and rub onto the chair mechanisms to have more control over where the oil goes.
Once you turn your chair back over, promptly wipe away any excess product to avoid damaging your surroundings.
