What causes bin smells?
Even if bin bags are replaced often, a small tear can lead to a leakage that will become a breeding hub for germs and bacteria. If left untreated for even a short amount of time, this can generate an unpleasant bin smell that lingers in and around the property. While it's not necessary to clean your bin out every day, there are simple ways to keep the bad bin smell under control.
Top tip: place some newspapers at the bottom of the bin to soak up any excess liquids

How to get rid of bin smells by cleaning
Remove a harsh bin smell by cleaning your bin outdoors or in a large container, such as a bathtub.
Empty the bin contents and use a wet paper towel to remove any debris. Pour hot water into the bin until a third is full and add a few drops of washing up liquid. Mix the solution well until bubbles (suds) are created.
Use a long-handled brush to scrub the inside, outside and the lid of the bin. Take caution to not splash the boiling water. Rinse away the soapy solution with cold water and leave to air dry.
Wipe with a dry soft cloth and spray white vinegar inside and outside the bin. Not only does the white vinegar act as a powerful deodoriser, but it also kills germs and bacteria.
How prevent bin smells
Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda on the bottom of the bin to naturally soak up any bad bin smells.
Add a few drops of essential oil or vanilla extract to cotton balls and place on the bottom of the bin to emit a pleasant odour.
Use coffee beans or coffee grounds to neutralise any odours by sprinkling some across the bottom of your indoor or outdoor bin.
