The original two walls surrounding Berwick where almost two miles long, of which only fragments remain today, and put up to defend the town. When built in 1558 , the walls were the most expensive undertaking of England’s Golden Age. Following an Italian design, the walls had bastions to allow gunfire covering along the walls. The walls once surrounded the town and had four gates to allow entry.
Today, the Elizabethan Walls are one of the best preserved examples of their kind in Europe. The 45 minute walk along the remaining walls allow you to enjoy stunning views over town and appreciate views toward the surrounding beaches.
