As heat rises inside a property, it creates a vacuum like space that needs to be filled. Draughty windows tend to have tiny holes that allow for cold air from outside to rush in and fill the space.
While we can’t prevent the vacuum-like space from happening, there are simple measures that can be put in place to reduce draughty windows.
Before looking at fixing draughty windows, it’s important to find the source of the problem. Typically, you can spot a faulty window by feeling a breeze or a chill when you pass it. However, if there is condensation then it may mean that there is an issue with your window seal and it is no longer insulating as it should be.
If you’re not sure which window has a draught, gently move a lit candle around the window area until the flame bends or flickers noticeably.
Caulk is a waterproof sealer that can be bought cheaply at most stores. There are different types of caulk available so make sure to read the packaging to find one suitable for your property.
Simply apply the caulk in a straight line to fill any gaps around windows or doors. Caulk does break down over time, so inspect it regularly for any potential gaps that are letting cold air in.
Top tip: There are specific parts of windows (called weep holes) that are purposely there to allow moisture to escape. Always check online for guidance before using caulk as blocking the weep holes can cause damage to your windows.
window dressings and layers can help to stop draughty windows and keep cool air out. This can be achieved by adding an extra layer of blinds, curtains and drapes to help provide protection against cold weather.
Top tip: open blinds in south facing rooms to allow for sunshine to warm the space
Draught stoppers are a handy way to keep cold air from seeping through doors, but you can also make your own and adjust the sizing to your windows.
To make your own draught blocker you’ll need popcorn kernels (or dried beans), long fluffy socks and some fabric such as old pillow stuffing. Place popcorn kernels into an old sock and layer with pillow stuffing. The kernels will help to weigh down the stopper while the pillow stuffing will work to keep cold air out. Repeat this process until the sock is full and tie a knot at the end to keep it in place. You can attach several sock draught blockers to each other to create a longer one if necessary.
