Despite the weather, Northumberland is widely accepted as one of England’s greatest counties.
Its friendly people, stunning coastlines, and countless historic castles all come together to make it one of the best places in England.
At MMCS, we are fortunate to be look after holiday properties and offices based in such beautiful surroundings. Here are our top 5 reasons as to why we love it so much.
Castles
Northumberland boasts a variety of castles. Built in the 11th century, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England and continues to be a favourite amongst locals and visitors.
Its majestic interiors and well-preserved rooms make it the top of the list for a day out in Northumberland for all ages.
With the library itself being home to 14,000 books, the vastness of the building alongside its adjacent 12-acre garden continues to attract thousands of visitors a year.
Alongside the grand castle, meandering gardens, and the charming village of Alnwick - the castle also played its role in the Harry Potter films.
Naturally, this gem of a castle had to come first in the list of what makes Northumberland great.
Holy Island of Lindisfarne
With recorded history from the 6th century, Lindisfarne was one of the first places in the UK to be attacked by Viking raiders.
Now, its rural setting serves as a peaceful and historic retreat for city-goers.
However, every Summer, Lindisfarne closes its doors to children and hosts a genre-hopping music festival.
An island, rich in history, is a perfect retreat for families throughout the year and later hosts a music festival in the summer. What more could we want?
However, make sure to take notice of the warnings on the causeway as at least one car is stranded there every month - and it’s an expensive rescue!
Music & Food Culture
Northumberland is a big fan of hosting various festivals across the county.
Whether the festival is focused on good food or good music, there is always something to do in the summer.
Old ruins often become the site for festival go-ers with events ranging from the Mouth of the Tyne festival, held at Tynemouth Priory Castle, and the 40 year strong International Music Festival hosted by Alnwick.
What could be better than having a drink, dance, and a laugh with friendly Northerners?
Miles of Beaches
With over 30 miles of sand across the coastline, the beaches in Northumberland don’t come short of spectacular.
Dotted with cheerful seaside towns and villages, many beaches have brilliant amenities for locals and tourists, ranging from fresh fish and chips in Seahouses to steak and wine in Tynemouth.
The variety of beaches mean that you can always find the perfect one for you. Whether you’re looking to have a picnic in a hidden spot or try out a new water sport - Northumberland has it all.
Starry Nights
Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is the largest preserve of its kind in Europe and is officially the best place in England to enjoy the stars.
With low levels of light pollution, it is often easy to spot the Milky Way from here.
