We all love drinking them, but the tannin found in coffee and tea beverages can stain fabric surfaces easily, especially if left untreated.
In a hurry? Blot (don’t scrub!)
as much liquid as you can and cover the spill with salt to try and soak more liquid up. Once you have a bit more time, you can move onto trying one of our natural ways of removing coffee stains from a carpet.
Washing up liquid and vinegar
Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with one tablespoon of washing up liquid and two cups of warm water.
Using a cloth, apply the mixture to the stain in small amounts whilst using a second, dry cloth to blot away until the stain disappears.
Rinse off any remaining mixture on the carpet using a wet sponge, and blot dry with a towel.
Soda water
Test on a hidden area of carpet first to make sure that it won’t stain the fabric, or make it worse.
Slowly pour small amounts of soda water onto the stain and blot with a clean cloth.
Work your way from the outside of the stain, to the inside, to avoid spreading it even further.
Baking soda
After blotting up excess liquid (using a paper towel or a cloth) create a thick mixture using two teaspoons of baking soda and two teaspoons of water.
Massage the stain with this mixture (try to get it deep into the fibres) and allow it to dry.
Once dried, use a soft brush to collect the residue and hoover the mixture.
Repeat this process until the stain has disappeared.
Egg yolk and water
We’re not yolking! Beat an egg yolk with some water and apply a little to the stain, blotting it as you go.
Leave the mixture for a few minutes, and then blot it away with a damp cloth.
Finally, use a damp (not soaking wet!) sponge to blot and ensure that all the egg yolk has been lifted.
