What is rust?
Rust is a term used to describe a reaction called oxidisation which occurs when metal is exposed to oxygen and moisture (such as humidity). This creates a red, flaky coating that is referred to as rust. While all metals are susceptible to some form of corrosion, rust only occurs on metals such as iron, iron alloys and steel.
How to remove rust
Top tip: always test any new methods on a hidden area first
How to remove rust with vinegar
White vinegar is one of nature's most powerful cleaner and its acidic properties make it ideal for removing rust. For this method, you'll need white vinegar, a container (such as a sink, bucket or tub), a sponge and an old toothbrush or a scouring pad.
Place the metal object into a container and soak in a solution of one part warm water to one part white vinegar. Leave to soak overnight. Use an old toothbrush or scouring pad to gently scrub any remaining rust away and remove it with the sponge. Remove traces of vinegar with the sponge and thoroughly dry with a cloth.
Repeat this process as necessary.
How to remove rust with baking soda
Baking soda is an effective way of gently rubbing away rust from cooking tools without leaving any toxic chemicals behind. For this method you'll need a steel wool, a cloth and baking soda.
Cover a tabletop surface with a large towel. Ensure that the metal object is fully dry and gently dust it with baking soda. Leave to sit for at least two hours. Dampen the steel wool with water and scour any remaining dust until removed. Rinse with water and towel dry. Repeat as necessary using a toothbrush to get into smaller areas.
How to remove rust with a potato
Potatoes are a surprisingly effective way to remove dust at home. They contain oxalic acid, a common ingredient found in many cleaning products, that helps to dissolve rust. For this method you'll need a small potato and some dish soap.
Cut the potato in half and cover in dish soap. Place this on the rust and leave to work for a few hours. If necessary, make the potato slice smaller or cut the shape to make it fit easier on the rust. Rinse and wipe the metal object and dry fully.
For stubborn rust, sprinkle some baking soda directly onto the metal and rub with a potato slice so scrub away rust.
