Bamburgh Castle is located in the small town of Bamburgh in Northumberland and can be accessed by car by following the B1341 off the A1. The nearest train station is Chathill station found 8 miles away.
Bamburgh castle is mentioned in writings in the year 547 by the then Anglo-Saxon ruler Ida of Bernicia. This was during the period when the castle known to be one of the most powerful kingdoms of its time. The site itself has been inhabited for over 12,000 years and archaeological evidence has since been found of the Bronze age, Iron age and the Roman occupation.
Ida of Bernicia ruled the Kingdom of Bernicia from 547 until his death in 559 when the Kingdom was passed on to his son. His son's successor was Æthelfrith who ruled over Bernicia and Deira of which both kingdoms later formed to become Northumbria. The kingdom was then passed on to his wife Bebba who built a wooden fortification on the castle's location that was referred to as Beddenburgh.
Over time, the name was simplified to Bamburgh.
The Battle of Neville's Cross took place in the nearby city of Durham on October 17, 1346. The Scots were defeated and the King at the time, King David II of Scotland was captured and briefly held at Bamburgh castle.
Bamburgh castle is open to the public and has 14 state rooms as well as two museums, one dedicated to the archaeological findings in the area and the other to William Armstrong's inventions in the field of aviation. William Armstrong was an inventor and industrialist who bought Bamburgh castle in 1894. The museum dedicated to him features a collection of his artwork and ceramics that he loved at the time.
