Located near the river Aln, Alnwick castle was built in the 11th century to protect the border and symbolise a sense of power for the new Norman barons across England. Its large defences include 2 metre thick walls, a 7 metre deep moat and two baileys that can be explored today. The castle boasts a rich history and was once attacked by the then King of Scotland, William the Lion, in 1173 and 1174 before he was captured during the second attack. Second only to Windsor Castle, Alnwick castle is the second largest inhibited castle in England as the Percy Family still live in the castle today. The current duke of Alnwick and his family occupy part of the castle and the castle opens its doors to the public in summer.
The castle underwent many renovations in its first five centuries and continues to be renovated today to preserve it.
Alnwick castle and its majestic grounds has been used for filming many movies and TV shows. It is most well known in Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter & The Philosopher's stone as well as in Downton Abbey's 2015 and 2016 Christmas specials.
While there are over 150 rooms in Alnwick castle, only six of them are open to the public. This includes the library which includes over 16,000 books in a collection that was started over 400 years ago.
In the 16th century the castle was abandoned and temporarily used as a prison. The change in the political scene meant that the castle was no longer as important as a military post and began to fall into a disrepair. In the 18th century the Percy Family started work on maintaining the castle and were elevated to a Duke status in 1766 by King George II.
