What is citric acid?
Citric acid is a versatile cleaning agent with powerful cleaning properties. It can naturally be found in lemons, limes and grapefruits but can be bought at cheap prices in a powdered form.
It is a low level acid that was first produced by extracting it directly from citrus fruits. Today it is produced on an industrial scale through various stages of fermentation.
Cleaning with citric acid
Mix a few heaped teaspoons of citric acid with warm water until the citric acid dissolves. Place this mixture into a reusable spray bottle. You can use this citric acid cleaning solution across your home to effectively remove dirt, hard water build-up and mould and mildew.
Polish and clean stainless steel
Citric acid is perfect for giving your stainless steel pots and pans a deep clean and polish.
Spray the solution directly onto a stainless steel pot or pan, focusing on stubborn areas. Leave the solution to sit and work for up to 10 minutes.
Wipe the solution away with a dry cloth. Repeat the steps above for stubborn marks until they are removed.
Rinse the stainless steel with water before drying again using a dry cloth
Tackle grout easily
Grout build-up on tiles can be difficult to remove. Citric acid is a great way to remove grout, mould and mildew without using a lot of elbow grease.
Simply spray a solution of warm water and dissolved citric acid onto the grout and leave for up to one hour.
Use an old toothbrush to go over stubborn areas and wash away with cool water.
Repeat the above steps as required to remove grout successfully without leaving any toxic smells.
Quick toilet bowl clean
This simple citric acid cleaning tip is a great way to save time on cleaning the bathroom without sacrificing end results.
Simply sprinkle a few heaped tablespoons of citric acid into the bowl and surrounding areas and leave to work for ten minutes.
Use a toilet brush to spread the mixture around the bowl and flush for a quick, effective clean.

Laundry
Did you know that when you take your laundry out of the washing machine it is alkaline? Citric acid is an effective way to restore the ph level in your clothes and help your clothes last longer.
Add a few heaped teaspoons into your washing machine and reduce the amount of detergent used. This will leave your clothes looking and smelling clean without using any nasty chemicals.
Stain remover
Citric acid has powerful cleaning properties and can replace bleach to remove stains from white clothing.
Remove yellow stains by soaking clothing in a container of warm water and dissolved citric acid for a few hours. Place the laundry in a short cycle in the washing machine to remove the citric acid solution and brighten white clothing.
