Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a
powerful, natural disinfectant
which is storming the disinfectant market.
Although hypochlorous acid shares the same chlorine family as bleach, it does not irritate eyes, skin or lungs and is even safe to use on skin to treat acne with its anti microbial properties.
But what does hypochlorous acid smell like, and what does it do?
What does Hypochlorous Acid smell like?
Hypochlorous acid is made by electrolysing water
which, when left for a long period of time, eventually turns back into saltwater.
When a hypochlorous acid disinfectant is sprayed onto a surface, the proteins in a germ’s cell membrane cause a chemical reaction and form chloramines.
This releases a smell similar to a swimming pool.
The smell is harmless and dissipates into the air quickly, unlike the toxic smell that can occur after the use of bleach.
This smell only occurs when there are many germs on a surface. This means that the more you use it, the fainter
the smell will become as there will be fewer germs reacting with the disinfectant.
What does Hypochlorous Acid do?
Hypochlorous acid is found naturally in the white blood cells
of mammals (including the human body) and effectively kills bacteria, fungus, spores and viruses on surfaces (includign soft furnishings!).
The United States Environmental Protection Agency lists HOCl as an approved disinfectant
for Coronavirus (COVID-19).
As well as being nature’s most powerful disinfectant, when used in a fogging system it also effectively removes dust and pollen
and deodorises the air.
Airburst is the ultimate disinfectant system, which uses hypochlorous acid to disinfect surfaces at the touch of a button.
