The Simonside Hills lie in the award-winning Northumberland National Park and are located on the northern side of Harwood forest. The postcode for the free car park at the hills is NE65 7NW.
Fun fact: Simonside was once called Simundessete according to a document dated to 1279
The hills have two clear routes for visitors to follow. The green markers show the shortest route of one mile while the ridge walk uses red markers to take walkers through the forest to the top of Simonside Crags. The red route requires sturdy footwear but walkers can enjoy stunning scenery across the hills before heading back down to the historical Hillfort.
There is also an option to enjoy the Simonside Hills Circular Walk which covers 7.1 miles over through woodlands, rocky crags, and hills.
Mountain bikers and horse riders are welcome at Simonside hills but the unsurfaced tracks on the open moorland are for walkers only. Dogs are also allowed but only on a lead due to the range of wildlife living in the hills.
The scenic walk also has historical spots such as the Lordenshaws Iron Age Hillfort and impressions of roundhouses that were occupied approximately 2000 years ago. Towards the summit of Garleigh Hill, you can find one of the largest collections of ancient 'cup and ring' etchings that were likely to be carved by people during the Neolithic and Bronze Age approximately 3500-6000 years ago.
