Fun fact: The castle was originally a monastery in the 12th century.
The castle had a strategic position during the many bloody feuds on the Northumberland border. To this day, visitors have spotted apparitions and heard whisperings on the grounds. The castle hosts regular ghost tours into the late evening that can be booked through the website.
A notable ghost figure is the female often seen in the pantry. Visitors have reported spotting a frail white figure asking for water which some suggest represents a poisoning. In the chapel, many have heard the voices of two men whispering beside the Great Hall. Some say that the whisperings get quieter the more you search for their source.
The castle has an enclosed park for the Wild Cattle of Chillingham, the last survivors of the ancient cattle which once roamed Britain's forest. There are approximately 100 cattle, half of which are bulls. At one point in time the cattle both defended and fed the residents of the castle. Today, visitors can view the cattle accompanied by the Warden on a tour which shares the history of the cattle which has never been touched by human hand.
Open throughout the year, the castle boasts a lake, park and a 19th century garden. The idyllic garden was created in 1828 and is the work of royal designer Sir Jeffry Wyatville. Visitors can explore the lakes and spot wildlife such as deer, badgers and red squirrels amongst the grounds.
