Prudhoe is located in south Northumberland, about 11 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. While close to the city, the town has a rural feel and offers a picturesque escape from city life.
Fun fact: The name Prudhoe comes from the Anglo-Saxon name Prud (meaning proud) and hoe (meaning land)
Prudhoe Castle is a medieval castle found on the south bank of the River Tyne in Prudhoe. The castle was built as part of a series of Norman Castles after the 1066 Norman conquest. The castle was the only Northumberland castle to resist the Scots. It was once home to the Umframvilles but then later taken over by the famous Percy Family who restored it.
Today, it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade I listed building that can be explored by visitors.
Prudhoe is also home to Prudhoe Hall, a Grade II listed building that features a walled garden and gardener’s cottage. The Hall was built in 1876 by the Liddel family who made their fortune in coal mining, a prominent industry in Prudhoe.
While the Victorian glasshouses and cottage have deteriorated over time, there are restoration works in progress to bring the buildings back to life.
Crafters Emporium is a local Gift Shop found on Prudhoe’s high street. The gift shop is filled with handcrafted items from local artists making it the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir or present for a loved one.
The shop also hosts a range of craft workshop and sessions, such as taster art sessions, which are a perfect activity for a rainy day. Find out more about upcoming taster sessions on their
