Hexham is located on the River Tyne in the South-West of Northumberland. The town has ample parking areas and is easily accessible by road. It is a short distance from the A69 that runs from a junction at the A1 at Newcastle right through Hadrian's Wall Country to Carlisle.
You can also access it by a regular bus service that stops through several local villages or via train from Newcastle.
Hexham Abbey is one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England. It was originally founded as a monastery in 674 and the original Saxon crypt of the monastery still survives today. The long history of the Abbey means that it has experienced many changes over the years, particularly in the 19th century when it was significantly rebuilt. The oldest of Hexham Abbey's bells was cast in 1742.
Today, the Abbey is home to three choirs and has a services that take place at least twice every day. The Abbey keeps its doors open to the public to enjoy the incredible interior and monastic relics.
Hadrian's Wall was build by 15,000 members of the Roman army on the orders of emperor Hadrian in AD 122. Hadrian's Wall is 73 miles long and is Britain's greatest Roman monument, as well as a World Heritage Site.
Hexham is one of the gateways to Hadrian's Wall and parts of the wall can be accessed a few miles just outside of the town. You can access the beautiful countryside views and nearby Roman forts and museums on the wall via car or bus.
The River Tyne is England's finest salmon river and runs through Hexham. You can also find pike, sea trout, brown trout and rainbow trout in the river too. Fishing requires a permit from the owner or manager of the water and an Environment Agency National Rod Licence that can be found at post offices, tackle shops or the government website.
Built in 1333, Hexham Gaol is the earliest purpose-built prison in England. The monument is a historic treasure that has now been converted to a museum that shows what life was like in prison in the 1300s. The immersive museum features photographs, books and historical artefacts from the 1300s that the whole family can enjoy all year round.
