Northumberland Castles
Prudhoe Castle
Prudhoe Castle is one of the lesser known Northumberland castles. Built after the 1066 Norman conquest, the castle was built as part of a series of Norman castles. It was first built as a simple timber structure which was linked to an enclosed area called a bailey.
Located on the south bank of the Tyne, this castle was owned by the Percy family for much of its history.
The castle is the only medieval defensive building in the whole of Northumberland.
Chillingham Castle
Known as being the most haunted of all Northumberland castles,
Chillingham Castle was originally a monastery when it was built in the late 12th century.
In 1298, King Edward I famously stayed at the castle on his way to Scotland to battle and army led by William Wallace.
The castle is said to be haunted by the ghosts of a torturer who still resides in the torture chamber, a lady in white, and a ‘blue boy’ ghost above the bed in the ‘pink room’.
Sections of the castle are now open to the public for ghost tours, and the castle also boasts eight apartments with outbuildings available for public use.
Edlingham Castle
Although it is now mostly ruins,
Edlingham castle is still a popular choice among Northumberland castles to visit.
Located to the west of Alnwick, the foundations of the hall house, gatehouse, barbican and other courtyard buildings are still visible.
Sir William Felton built the hall house in around 1300. He was an English knight who took part in the Battle of Halidon Hill, 1333, and is now buried there.
