Hypochlorous Acid: Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypochlorous acid?
Hypochlorous acid, also known as HOCl, is a nature’s most powerful disinfectant. As mammals, we naturally produce hypochlorous acid in our white blood cells to tackle harmful pathogens and break down cell walls in the body.
In person, hypochlorous acid is commonly seen as a light coloured fluid. It only emits a faint chlorine-like smell when it is sprayed onto germs triggering a chemical reaction. This smell dissipates quickly, and weakens as germs are removed from a surface.
In the skincare industry, hypochlorous acid can be seen in the form of serums and creams to help users with skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema.
How do I use hypochlorous acid?
When disinfecting surfaces, hypochlorous acid is generally used with a spray bottle or in disinfecting machines (such as fogging machines).
The spray can be used like any normal spray by simply applying the solution to a surface and wiping away with a dry cloth.
Airburst uses a portable machine that creates a fine mist of hypochlorous acid to effectively disinfect soft furnishings (such as carpets and curtains) as well as remove dirt and pollen from the air.

How do you make hypochlorous acid?
Hypochlorous acid is made by combining water, salt and vinegar with electrical charge.
Is hypochlorous acid better than bleach?
Hypochlorous acid kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses without the need for personal protection equipment (PPE).
Bleach is effective at killing germs, however the EPA states that it can take up to ten minutes for bleach to disinfect a surface. Bleach can also irritate the skin and the airway, particularly for allergy sufferers, which can cause discomfort to users.
Bleach can also be incredibly harmful for pets and children. On the other hand, hypochlorous acid is mild enough to be used across the skincare and optician industry due to its gentle chemical-free nature.
