While you don’t have to wash pillows as much as you wash your bedding, we recommend giving your pillows a good clean at least every three to four months. This helps to keep harmful bacteria, and therefore smells, at bay.
Top tip: if you’re ever unsure about how to clean the material of your pillow, consult a local dry cleaning professional for advice and support
Always check the tag on your pillow to read the care instructions before washing. If your pillow is cotton, feather or down then it can usually be washed in the washing machine.
We recommend a short, warm or cold cycle with half the amount of your usual detergent. Too much detergent and long cycles can make the feathers inside too wet and clump together.
Top tip: wash your pillow in a pillowcase to help it maintain its form
Once your pillow has been washed it’s important to fully dry it to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria. Ideally, place the pillow in a tumble dry on low heat for a short amount of time. If this is not possible then leave to air-dry in a well-ventilated room (with a fan) or in the sunshine.
Most latex or memory foam pillows cannot be washed in a washing machine. Fortunately, there are still simple ways to tackle stains and freshen them up.
First, vacuum the pillows to remove the top layer of dust and any debris.
Mix a little washing-up liquid (ideally clear) in a bowl with warm water until bubbles are created and dip a clean cloth into the weak soapy solution. Apply gently to stains and marks and wipe away with a separate damp cloth dipped in water.
Top tip:
for tougher stains, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a tablespoon of white vinegar to create a fizzing solution and apply it to the stain. Leave to soak for five minutes before wiping with a damp cloth.
