Sweep the sandstone patio to remove any loose debris.

Start by mixing environmentally-friendly washing up liquid into a bucket of hot water until suds (bubbles) appear. Pour this mixture over the sandstone slabs, ensuring that all areas are covered.
Use a hard-bristled brush to scrub away at every sandstone pavestone to remove the top layer of dirt and grime.
Rinse with a bucket of warm water and leave to air dry for 24 hours.
If stains are still noticeable, repeat the process until they have lightened or been removed.

always patch test baking soda on a hidden area first
When thinking of how to remove stains from a sandstone patio, many people opt for bleach. However, due to the porous nature of the stone, this can cause permanent discolouration. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives that work just as well (and it’s found in your cupboard).
For tough stains, mix baking soda and water until a paste is created. Use a hard-bristled brush to apply the paste onto the stain and scrub vigorously.
Leave to work on the stain for up to 30 minutes before rinsing or hosing away.
Repeat this process until the stain has been removed.
