It's important to consider why your dishwasher smells before starting to clean it as this can prevent more smells in the future.
One of the most common reasons for dishwasher smells is standing water which can cause mould to grow inside. This can happen if the dishwasher is left closed for a significant period of time leaving water to stagnate inside. You can prevent this by ensuring that the dishwasher is opened regularly and aired out.
Another common reason is due to the accumulation of food scraps and dirt in the interior which can lead to the growth of mould and bacteria. Fortunately this can be easily removed through regular cleaning, as well as a deep clean every 6 months.
The filter is a key component of a dishwasher and prevents food items from clogging the drain. Over time, the build up of these food items and liquids can cause foul smells.
Remove the drain from the dishwasher (found on the floor) and wash with hot soapy water. Use a soft brush to scrub in smaller spaces and remove all dirt.
Check the drain for signs of build up and wipe using hot water and a sponge. If the drains smells foul then pour spray white vinegar inside and leave to soak for 5 minutes before rinsing with hot water. White vinegar is a natural way to disinfect and clean your dishwasher and remove odours without using chemicals.
Once clean, reinsert the filter ensuring that it locks into place.
Dirt and food grime can slowly build up on the inside of the dishwasher and cause unpleasant odours. Before tackling the walls, gently remove the upper and lower spray arms for a deep clean. Use hot water and a sponge to remove food particles. If necessary, use a cotton swab to reach inside smaller holes. Run water through the holes to make sure that all the holes are clear and unblocked.
Remove upper and lower racks and run them under hot water. Spray with white vinegar and leave to soak for 5 minutes before scrubbing with a soft brush. Remove white vinegar traces using a sponge.
Spray white vinegar into the inside of the dishwasher covering all the walls from top to bottom. Leave to sit for five minutes before wiping with a soft damp cloth to remove any remaining residue.
Place the spray arms and racks back into place, ensuring that they lock into place.
Place a bowl with white vinegar onto the top rack of the dishwasher and run a short cycle. This will rinse the inside and remove any remaining scents.
Top tip: Run a short cycle with vinegar occasionally for a quick clean in between deep cleans
