Prior to starting the deep clean of the barbecue, check its outside for dirt, rust or markings. Tackle rust effectively by applying a little ketchup to the area and leave it to sit for five minutes. Gently remove with a damp cloth.
Use a soft damp cloth to remove any dust and cobwebs. Check that all the knobs and hinges are functioning and replace or tighten as necessary.
Turn your barbecue on low heat and leave for thirty minutes to burn off any stubborn residue.
Then, lay a few sheets of newspaper onto the grill and spray water to dampen the sheets. Close the barbecue lid and leave it to steam for another thirty minutes. The steam will help to release stubborn grease and fat left on the grill.
You don’t need to use harsh chemicals when deep cleaning a barbecue. Simply sprinkle baking soda liberally over the grill and leave to sit for ten minutes. Baking soda is a powerful, natural way of dissolving grease and leftover food substances.
After ten minutes, spray white vinegar on the baking soda to cause a fizzing reaction. The vinegar will help to remove any bad odours and tackle stubborn residue.
Use warm water and a ball of scrunched-up aluminium foil to remove the baking soda residue.
To prevent rust, pour some sunflower oil onto a soft cloth and apply liberally to the outside of the barbecue and the grill. This will prevent rust in the future and help to prevent food from sticking at a later date.
