Compared to the stricter cleaning regime of the fridge, the freezer is often neglected. But to keep it running on top form it requires regular cleaning to ensure that long-term food is being stored safely. Fortunately, it’s not as difficult or complicated as you may think and many modern freezers have compartments that are easy to remove. Discover how to clean a freezer effectively with our handy guide below.

We recommend carrying out a deep clean of your freezer once every few months. Not only will this increase its energy efficiency, but it will also allow you to track and monitor the food stored inside and ensure that all food items are in date and keep on top of any food spillages.
Start by turning off the freezer and unplugging it. Lay a few towels around the freezer to prepare for any spills.
Remove all the food from your freezer placing them into a fridge or ice-filled cooler box to keep them cool while you work.
Remove all the shelves and drawers and soak them in a sink full of warm, soapy water.
Top tip:
always use a fragrance free soap to prevent any scents from transferring onto your freezer or food
Mix a solution of equal parts hot water and white vinegar into an empty cleaning bottle. Spray this solution liberally in the inside of the freezer. The vinegar will work to naturally disinfect the surfaces and remove any bad odours.
Wipe the solution with a soft sponge. For any stubborn stains, spray the cleaning solution onto a paper towel and leave to soak on the stain for at least ten minutes. Use a soft-bristled brush, or a toothbrush, to gently scrub away if necessary.
Dry the inside of the freezer thoroughly with a paper towel and replace the shelves and drawers.
Restock the freezer with the frozen food, organising the items by priority. Turn the clean freezer on and enjoy a cleaner, effective freezer storage for your food items.
Top tip: never overload a freezer compartment as this could prevent the door from closing
