The COVID-19 pandemic has seen the sales of cleaning and hygiene products, such as as soap and hand sanitiser, reach record highs across the globe.
As the UK eases out of lockdown, hand sanitiser is now found in almost all public places with signs encouraging staff and customers alike to use it regularly. Around 76% of us also own two bottles of hand sanitiser or more, and 18% even go as far as owning four or more bottles (Thegrocer.co.uk).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections and disease is by washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly before eating and after using the toilet.
If you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water, CDC recommends the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol.
However, for people who have sensitive skin or skin conditions
such as eczema or psoriasis, the alcohol in hand sanitisers can irritate hands and cause painful flare ups.
According to the site Patient.info, one way to treat sore, sensitive skin is by immediately applying moisturiser onto the sanitised hands - as this does not prevent the sanitiser from being effective.
An Alternative to Alcohol Based Sanitiser
A new product, Hypochlorous Acid, is emerging onto the hand sanitiser scene.
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is a weak acid that already naturally happens in our body when white blood cells attack harmful bacteria.
HOCl is made by electrolysing salt and water to create a highly effective disinfectant which kills almost all known germs without the use of harsh, toxic chemicals. While it is as effective as alcohol based sanitisers at killing viruses, it also provides an additional benefit of killing spores.
It is the natural disinfectant solution
which is safe for people, pets, and the planet.
It can be used to safely disinfect the skin, and is already widely used in dermatology and the eye care industry due to its ability to gently eradicate harmful bacteria from eyelids without burning or damaging them.
